Western Wind

I was born by the radio
In the cradle of the crocus plains
In the shadow of a grain elevator
And the rumble of a west bound train
Mama said you could hear them trains
When the clouds were low
It’s gonna bring a much needed rain
Or a Thanksgiving snow

Just east of nowhere
And west of someplace better
We were all gonna get on out of there
Come first break in the weather
It seems half the town was cap and gown
Come the end of June
Well some of us left and I guess the rest
Kept doing what we’s doing

And the western wind
Lets you know you’re back home again
It doesn’t matter where you’ve been
There’s something in the western wind

I’ve watched flood waters
Damn near swallow my neighbour whole
We didn’t just stand there
We threw sandbags in the cold
And everyone in town came around
To save the Lewis farm
Every man, woman and child
Walking arm in arm

And the western wind
Lets you know you’re back home again
It doesn’t matter where you’ve been
There’s something in the western wind

Next month will be ten years
Since the “Old Lion” passed away
And the lessons that he taught me
I carry with me to this day
And everyone in town came around to say
“Till we meet again”
As we lowered him down into the ground
In a howling western wind

And the western wind
Lets you know you’re back home again
It doesn’t matter where you’ve been
There’s something in the western wind
