8:30 Newfoundland

Recorded from May 2008 through March 2009
in Nashville, Tennessee.
Released in June 2009
Produced by Brent Maher and Charles Yingling

Jenny, Ruby and I moved back to Tennessee in August of 2006. Jenny had a job as a music therapist and I had a gig writing songs for a living again. I moved back to Tennessee with the sole purpose of having someone else record my songs. That way I could stay home, write songs, walk my daughter to school… you know, live the life. One day in December 2006 I started writing a song with Jason McCoy. We wrote the first verse and never bothered with it again. Anyway, a year later, I found myself in the familiar situation of having no luck getting my songs recorded. I then found myself dreaded position of losing my job as a songwriter or at least losing my paycheck. I was once again at loose ends. Forty years old and not sure what to do with my life. Then I finished the song that I had started with McCoy. I called it “8:30 Newfoundland”. This song was different. This one felt like something special. Then the idea of doing a new album came around.
Then the thought came up that maybe I should get the band back together and record one more album for the hell of it. Then I started writing songs that felt like songs that only we could, would and should do. So we did. It was great to be in the same room with the guys again. It was great to count that first song in and just let it flow. We all felt it.

I downloaded the 8:30 NFLD album from iTunes last night after having the title song for awhile. I think it was a freebie on iTunes from Starbucks. (I do drink in non-chain coffee shops too, and usually find that’s where the good music hangs out.) I started a new playlist called Canada and your song just had to be on it, in fact most of the album had to be on it, along with Ole Eon, Corb Lund and the Gordies (Downie and Lightfoot).
Cheers, I will have a black and tan for ya, and hope to catch yiz when either you are in or near Kingston ON or I am near where yer to.
